Unexpected Detour

Day 5 riding was well underway. Hills, sweat, sweet brunch spot with a private bathroom for me and Megan ( gold).

35 miles down and we hit a bump in the road.  Well, let me clarify that. I literally hit the road after crashing on my bike. As I headed down an average hill, I ended up on the very sandy edge of the road and didn’t make it back on the road safely.  My bike went one way and I did a nice slide on the road.  Megan was first on the scene as she witnessed the crash and was super helpful with my injuries and thereafter helping with the kids.

A nurse was driving by and took over the medical stuff until Mike arrived on the scene and decided 911 was necessary.  Good call bc I did end up with stitches in my arm and forehead, and a very large hematoma developed at the hospital.  Face recognition is no longer working on my phone- j/ k- it is! But I will have quite a “pretty” scar.  After many scans and tests, praise the Lord there were no broken bones and no internal damage.

None of us were ready to call the trip, and I even asked to be taken to the hospital closest to the trail bc I didn’t know I’d have more than a few cuts and scrapes and wanted to get back on my bike.  I still do and am hoping to get back to it soon.

In the meantime we have this new addition for a week or two as I heal.  https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1b1X2URQszM5-noq3UgOqPrfH8zglJyU5
We are all super grateful for all the help we had along the way with this detour, and that we’re able to continue onward.  I’ve been sagging which has its own benefits for our crew. And it is worth repeating that I don’t have any broken bones or internal injuries.  Thank you Lord!

We made it to New Hampshire yesterday and will be in Vermont tomorrow. We’re settling into our new “ norm” just in time to hopefully ditch the UHaul and adjust again as a group to self contained life once again.

  2. Wow! That sounds like a significant crash. I am so sorry!

I also bet it's tough to lose one of 4 parents on the road with the kids. The whole configuration gets shuffled - but the kids are gaining experience fast and don't need quite as much road management?!?

I'm watching your approach. I admit I wasn't able to keep my calendar as open as I hoped, but I'll be looking for a window of opportunity between Syracuse and Cleveland.
