On the Road Again

It’s been a curveball for us all to have the sagwag this past week and a half. There have been blessings with it- less weight through the Adirondacks for the cyclists, a little bit of rest for the grown ups ( and Koen who got to sag one day with Mike), and a shelter from the crazy thunderstorm we awoke to two nights ago at Raquett Lake. This is a picture of what the evening before this storm looked like. The boys have endless energy, which we all knew ahead of time. We rode about 40 miles and then they swam for a couple of hours! Often we adults get in our tents before they do!

June 12 I made some calls to figure out lodging ( sagwag duties) and we stayed with Father Peter in Newcomb NY.  He was super generous and shared his three upstairs bedrooms, showers, and dinner with us, giving us awesome pizza from the next town over.  He asked how we found out about him because he has cyclists every year but has none last year because of Covid. It was random, or maybe not He was my first call if the day. I think it was a little gift for him too because he certainly enjoyed the company and giving the boys a tour of the area. This is where the Hudson River begins. Looks a lot different up North than in the Big Apple.

June 11- Koen’s birthday! Double digits! After a full day of riding the crew arrived at Maple Ridge Campground, about 6 miles beyond the bridge from Vermont to New York. We had dinner at the Crab Shack, an On-site restaurant. Then birthday cake and presents for Koen.

We often joke about scarring our children and that they potentially will hate us after this cross country journey. They’ve actually seemed to be enjoying it much more than anticipated, and I think they are really each “owning” it in their own way.

Big news! Today ( June 15) we ditched the Uhaul and return to self sustained touring tomorrow!  We’ll hopefully get into a new groove soon with our group intact, all cycling.
Dr. Megan took out my elbow stitches today, and I had my forehead stitches removed at the clinic a few days ago. My hematoma is still somewhat irritating but as long as I support it while I ride it seems to be OK.

I’m reminded that our bodies are temperory and do fail us. Nurturing the eternal is essential and valuable.  I love seeing Beauty reflected in nature, those we meet, and our group.  We’re on the road again tomorrow to discover and enjoy more!

  3. I'd say, aside from Laurie's incident, you've had a remarkably good first two weeks. Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves and it's good to see the boys have time to be boys. Well done all!
