Catch Up

Notes from Megan...
In the last several days much has happened so let me catch you up.

Saturday, June 4th -- We started in Brunswick, ME.  It was an incredibly hot day.  We were 4 miles from our lunch stop, we had done about 40 miles already.  Laurie had an unfortunate accident. 

Through the kindness of strangers we were blessed with lots of help.  She has some injuries that are healing and will be driving our sagwagon for the next little while.

Sunday, June 5th---That said...we took a rest day at Poland Springs Resort.  They were so kind and accomadating (bicycle groups are not their usual clientele).  The boys enjoyed the pool! 

Monday, June 6th--. Poland Springs, ME to Fryeburg, ME
This was by far the hottest day yet, 101 degrees! Megan and Laurie grabbed lunch and met the boys on the side of the road.  At the end of the day we enjoyed the Saco River.
Tuesday, June 7th--Fryeburg to Kancamagus Pass, NH
This was the first mountain pass 2,855 feet of elevation gain.  We stayed at Big Rock campground up on the mountain pass.
Wednesday, June 8th-- Big Rock to Orford, NH

We woke today to thunder and hard rain.  Yuck.  After, waiting for the storm to pass we left Big Rock Campground at 8am.  Lots of downhill today, the boys are really getting the hang of road safety, encouraging each other, and managing the uphills and downhills.  We climbed a second mountain today and at the top was the Appalachian Trail crossing.
Greg and Laurie met us with lunch about 12 noon.  We also stopped at a graveyard and found stones from the Revolutionary War on up.  Very interesting. Tomorrow we head into Vermont.

    I'm thankful your injuries weren't worse. Hope the rest of you ride is uneventful. Barb and I are looking forward to meeting you down the road.

The End of the Trail....For Now

From July 30 to August 2 we were welcomed into the home of Mike and Lori in Sagle, ID, just south of Sandpoint and across Lake Pend Oreille.  Mike and Lori took great care of us with fantastic meals, vehicle use, and great company.  And....what great names they both have. We spent our weekend with a half day swimming at Lake Pend Oreille and a full day at Silverwood Park, mainly in the water area........but with a few roller coasters thrown in.  Note Graham in the fourth seat from the front with his hands straight up in the air.  Anybody surprised? While at Silverwood, the adults had a pow-wow to discuss the realities of the increasing wildfires and smoke throughout Idaho and Washington, and what it might look like if we attempted to cross Washington State.  We were unable to come up with any good cycling options.  The path through Washington was simply unsafe.  So, we concluded that Sandpoint, ID would be the end of this summer's cross country bike tr...

Shake Down Trip 2020

   2020 Shakedown Trip:  Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes - Four Day Trip July 13 - July 17, 2020 Monday: Drove to the starting point of the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes in Plummer, ID.  Rails-to-trails route from Plummer to Mullan (~70 miles).  Pretty flat.  We started strong but malfunctions started soon after with Asher’s rear rack disconnecting and completely falling off the back of his bike.  Fixed it.  Asher then flagged me down and said his panniers were rubbing his tire.  It was actually a flat front tire and he had been rim riding on for about a mile.  We fixed the flat, it deflated, and then fixed it again.  We rode about a mile further and his bar bag disconnected and dropped off his bike.  Fixed it.  Stopped after the first ~15 miles in Harrison, swam, ate lunch and headed back on the trail for another 25 mile push to our first campsite.  Saw a ...

A flat spot on my front wheel

I have been riding with a flat spot on my front rim since early on in the tour.  We were cycling on a back road in Maine when I struck a large pot hole while hovering too close to the cyclist in front of me, Eli.  As he swerved out of the way I had no time to turn. The impact was significant.   Though the rim is bent it remains structurally sound.  However, each revolution of the tire results in a small drop in the wheel that makes me crazy while riding on a smooth road.  I can't feel it on most of the roads as the cracks and rough surface hide the flat spot.  Due to the lack of inventory in the cycling industry, I will probably make it work for the remainder of the tour.
