Catch Up

Image
Notes from Megan... In the last several days much has happened so let me catch you up. Saturday, June 4th -- We started in Brunswick, ME.  It was an incredibly hot day.  We were 4 miles from our lunch stop, we had done about 40 miles already.  Laurie had an unfortunate accident.  Through the kindness of strangers we were blessed with lots of help.  She has some injuries that are healing and will be driving our sagwagon for the next little while. Sunday, June 5th---That said...we took a rest day at Poland Springs Resort.  They were so kind and accomadating (bicycle groups are not their usual clientele).  The boys enjoyed the pool!  Monday, June 6th--. Poland Springs, ME to Fryeburg, ME This was by far the hottest day yet, 101 degrees! Megan and Laurie grabbed lunch and met the boys on the side of the road.  At the end of the day we enjoyed the Saco River. Tuesday, June 7th--Fryeburg to Kancamagus Pass, NH Th...

Unexpected Detour

Image
Day 5 riding was well underway. Hills, sweat, sweet brunch spot with a private bathroom for me and Megan ( gold).   35 miles down and we hit a bump in the road.  Well, let me clarify that. I literally hit the road after crashing on my bike. As I headed down an average hill, I ended up on the very sandy edge of the road and didn’t make it back on the road safely.  My bike went one way and I did a nice slide on the road.  Megan was first on the scene as she witnessed the crash and was super helpful with my injuries and thereafter helping with the kids.   A nurse was driving by and took over the medical stuff until Mike arrived on the scene and decided 911 was necessary.  Good call bc I did end up with stitches in my arm and forehead, and a very large hematoma developed at the hospital.  Face recognition is no longer working on my phone- j/ k- it is! But I will have quite a “pretty” scar.  After many scans and tests, praise the Lord there were n...

Bloggygagger

Image
Apparently, I have been dubbed the group’s Bloggygagger (blog lollygagger) since this is my first post.   Today was the 7 th day of riding on our cross-country trip, and while it hasn’t gone to plan, overall, it has been fantastic.    I’ve been meaning to add something to this blog for the past week– actually, I’ve sat down to work on it just about every day, but by the time we get to the evening campsite, get set up and get dinner, I am so exhausted and don’t have the energy.   That, or we lack wi-fi.   I figured I should probably start working on it in the mornings as I am generally up before the others (but we’ll see how long that lasts as we start getting up and out earlier as we start increasing our miles).   This trip has been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember, but I never wanted to be away from Megan and the boys for as long as it takes to do.   To be able to do it with them is wonderful, and to be doin...

“Old” Friends and New Ones

Image
The past few days have been full of ups and downs, literally.  So many hills- I know you veteran cyclists are chuckling since we’ve only just begun.  Thankfully we’re all getting stronger, and we’re all eating a LOT. I can’t keep track of the amount of food these boys have put down. So far maybe three regular meals and one large one daily, plus a couple of snacks.   On one of the first days we had brunch at a sweet restaurant in Bucksport and had the perfect spot, food, scenery, and an awesome waitress, Shari.    After lunch we rode across the Penobscot bridge we had looked at from our lunch table.  We decided to not miss the observatory in the top of this bridge where you have a 360 degree view 100 miles any direction. It’s 447 feet tall. Koen was all in but Eli and Asher had to be bribed to go up because they claimed they didn’t like heights. But they look happy, don’t they? We rode onward to Belfast where we stayed with the gentleman who opened his b...

Make Sure to Stay Hydrated Boys

It is Wednesday evening and my body is tired, but wanted to jot down a few notes from the past two days. Tuesday June 1, 2021 We started the tour yesterday morning with a ceremonial dipping of the back tire into the Atlantic Ocean in Bar Harbor.   Lunch in Ellsworth.  While riding out Asher had the first flat.  This was not a surprise after Asher's mechanical issues on the Trail de Coeur d'Alene trip.   Asher handled it well and helped replace the tube.....but it flatted again.  We got it fixed We rode just over 20 miles and camped out at Forest Ridge Campground near Ellsworth.  Not a great night sleep in the tent, but hopeful that after several days of riding sleep will come easier. Wednesday June 2, 2021 Small breakfast at campsite and headed out at ~8am with the goal of stopping for second breakfast in Bucksport, ~18 miles.  We made sure the boys knew the importance of drinking lots and lots of water to stay hydrated throughout the day.  ...
